The New Orleans City Council on Thursday unanimously defeated Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s veto of a measure aimed at ensuring the city attorney’s independence. The proposed charter amendment will now head to voters on the Nov. 15 ballot.

In her veto letter, Cantrell called the measure an attempt “to usurp the powers entrusted to the office of the Mayor.” Cantrell also said the measure conflicts with several existing charter provisions.

The council swiftly rejected Cantrell’s argument with little comment before voting, though Council President JP Morrell noted “an amendment to the charter cannot violate the charter.”
