PROVIDENCE − The fate of dozens of Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus routes remains in limbo after the agency's board of directors postponed a vote on budget-balancing operations cuts Thursday, Aug. 7.
Delaying a decision over the sweeping slate of proposed cuts – required to close a projected $17 million deficit − came at the request of Gov. Dan McKee , who asked RIPTA to find a different set of cost savings centered around a fare hike and reductions to administrative spending.
"To put the agency on stronger long-term financial footing, at today’s meeting, I urge the Board to direct the agency and its [planning consultant] to develop a new proposal − one that balances new revenue strategieswith targeted reductions to low-performing routes," McKee wrote to RIPTA in a letter
