LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Southern Nevada Health District detected the presence of the measles virus in Clark County wastewater, the district announced Thursday.
According to a release, this is the first detection of measles in local wastewater and could serve as an early indicator that the virus might be present in the community.
As of publication, there are no confirmed cases of measles among Clark County residents, and a second wastewater sample was negative for the virus.
Wastewater surveillance detects viral genetic material shed by infected individuals. A positive detection can indicate an undiagnosed or unreported measles infection in the area.
