An American man was arrested early Wednesday after he allegedly sneaked into Canada by kayaking across the Detroit River, authorities said.

The LaSalle Police Service said officers who were conducting commercial property checks at about 1 a.m. Wednesday found the man in the 1800 block of Front Road between Boismeir and Wahneta avenues. The location is also east of Fighting Island and Wyandotte.

Police checking the rear of a business saw the man at the edge of the Detroit River with a kayak and two backpacks.

Detectives said the 51-year-old man was trying to enter Canada illegally. They said they arrested him and turned him over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
