A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a Peter Pan bus outside 30th Street Station in Philadelphia’s University City, authorities announced on Thursday, Aug. 7.

The crash happened just before 9:35 a.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue, steps from one of the city’s busiest transit hubs.

The 40-year-old man had been panhandling between two lanes of traffic when he rolled in front of the bus as it was stopped at a red light, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Once the signal turned green, the bus — which was headed northbound on Schuylkill Avenue — began moving and struck the man. First responders from the Philadelphia Fire Department pronounced the victim dead at the scene at 9:44 a.m.

The driver of the tour bus remained at the scene. No injuries were reported among the roughly 30 passengers who were headed to Washington, DC, officials said.

The Crash Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the deadly collision.
