AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Capitol Police Chief Matthew Clancy is on administrative leave after being charged with assault, the Maine Department of Public Safety told NEWS CENTER Maine.

The charges stemmed from a reported disturbance in Hallowell last Friday , where Clancy was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The chief allegedly got into a scuffle with a responding officer.

Hallowell Police Chief Christopher Giles told the Central Maine Morning Sentinel that Clancy refused arrest for disorderly conduct.

The Department of Public Safety said it is conducting a thorough review of the incident.
