DERIDDER, La. (KPLC) - It’s another year of firsts for DeRidder Elementary students. Last year, they were in a new building, and this year they’re returning to school with a new principal.

Jennifer Galloway, a DeRidder native, is ready to leave behind the classroom and step into her new role as the school’s principal.

“You know it’s such a great opportunity to be able to lead this faculty and staff. I’m from DeRidder. I’ve been a teacher here for 12 years. Now I’m in administration, and it’s great to give back to the community,” Galloway said.

Students started arriving around 7:10 a.m. for the 8 a.m. school day.

“I like social studies, because I love learning about history. It’s just my favorite subject; I love it,” student Timothy Patterson said.
