A 78-year-old moped rider has died from injuries he sustained in a crash with a pedestrian earlier this month on Kapahulu Avenue, Honolulu police said.
The moped rider was traveling northbound on Kapahulu Avenue near Mooheau Avenue around 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 2 when he struck a 77-year-old pedestrian who was walking in a marked crosswalk against a red pedestrian signal.
The moped rider, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from his vehicle and taken to a hospital in serious condition. His condition later worsened to critical, and he died from his injuries Wednesday, police said.
The pedestrian was also taken to a hospital but was listed in good condition.
This marks Oahu’s 49th traffic fatality of the year, nearly double the 25 recorded at the same time in 2024.
