Labour’s homelessness minister Rushanara Ali has resigned after The i Paper revealed that she threw four tenants out of her east London townhouse.

The minister told four tenants she was selling the property and gave them notice to leave – only to relist it weeks after they left for nearly £700 more a month in rent.

Following the report, the Conservatives, Reform UK, the SNP and renters’ rights campaigners called for the minister and MP for Bethnal Green and Stepney to step down from her role .

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Ali said: “”It has been the honour of my life to have played my part in first securing and then serving as part of this Labour Government. You have my continued commitment, loyalty and support.
