MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Authorities say a Mesa father is in custody in connection with the death of his 4-week-old baby.

Mesa police arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Enriquez and booked him on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse.

Around 9 a.m. on July 11, authorities received reports of a baby not breathing at an apartment complex near University Drive and Gilbert Road. Officers arrived and found the 4-week-old girl unresponsive.

Emergency crews rushed the baby to the hospital in critical condition. Investigators say the baby remained in the hospital for 15 days until she died on July 26.

According to police, Enriquez was alone with his daughter when she stopped breathing. Investigators were initially told that the baby choked while being fed a bottle, but authorities learned
