Starting next week, the city of Mobile will remove more than two dozen stop lights from several intersections and replace them with four-way stops in an attempt to make downtown more pedestrian-friendly and safe, according to a Thursday statement.

A multi-year street optimization plan hatched by the Downtown Mobile Alliance in consultation with urban planner Jeff Speck will come to fruition Monday, Aug. 11, when crews will begin gradually transforming roughly 26 traffic signals at low-volume intersections into four-way stops, in most cases.
