SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A groundbreaking ceremony was officially held Thursday at Leeper Park.
The $1.7 million project will bring new tennis courts to South Bend.
The center will be renamed the ‘David Filer Tennis Center at Leeper Park.’
It honors the local tennis prodigy who died at 16 due to a brain tumor.
The parents talked about his legacy at the event.
“When David passed away, he was such a special person that we just felt that his legacy needed to be honored,” said the father of David Filer. “Actually, we were just looking for a tournament not the courts. It sort of evolved with the help of everyone here in South Bend.”
City officials hope the reconstruction will expand the sport’s presence in South Bend.
