STRATFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — First responders faced challenges on Thursday during a recovery mission for a 6-year-old boy who fell into the Housatonic River on Wednesday.

The strong currents made the recovery mission difficult, forcing them to cease diving operations, Stratford Deputy Fire Chief Jermaine Atkinson said.

"The boats are equipped with sonar, so there is scanning of the water, thermal imaging from the air, so we are trying everything we can to be able to find and locate him and use all the technology to the best of our abilities," Atkinson said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, about 12 to 15 divers, and safety crews from across the state, Cape Cod and New York assisted in the operation at the Birdseye Street boat ramp in Stratford.
