Oklahoma will be allowed to enforce a controversial law prohibiting gender transition surgery and related drug treatment for minors.
A federal appeals court on Wednesday referenced a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in making its decision to uphold the law that resulted from passage of Senate Bill 613 in 2023.
The law, signed by Gov. Kevin Stitt on May 1, 2023, was challenged in court by a group of transgender minors, their parents and Dr. Shauna Lawlis, a physician who specializes in gender-affirming care. The plaintiffs in the suit, styled Poe v. Drummond, were represented by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Oklahoma and Lambda Legal.
