Despite state Superintendent Ryan Walters announcing the end of government-mandated testing as a done deal, the Oklahoma State Department of Education is seeking a five-year federal waiver from statewide exams.

On Friday morning, the agency issued a press release about "moving away from" the Oklahoma State Testing Program in math and language arts for students in grades 3-8, allowing districts to instead rely on other state-approved exams starting in 2025-26.

However, such a move would require a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education. The Every Student Succeeds Act requires annual statewide assessments in math and language arts in grades 3-8, plus at least three assessments in science before a student graduates from high school.
