A Sussex County property has been quarantined and two of its horses euthanized after they showed signs of a usually fatal neurological disease, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture announced.
One horse was "humanely euthanized" in the last week of July after showing clinical signs of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), and the other, a 20-year-old mare, was euthanized Aug. 3. after the disease was confirmed through diagnostic testing, the department said in a news release.
According to the state, a third horse on the premises is under quarantine and being monitored for sickness. There have been no recent horse movements from the property, "making the risk of disease spread from this case very low," the NJDA said.
"The Department took swift action to prevent the disease from
