Users concerned about Instagram tracking their whereabouts can turn off the app’s location-sharing and Map features through in-app controls and phone settings.
The map feature allows users to share their last active location with the accounts they choose.
Instagram’s location tools are opt-in by default, meaning the app does not share a user’s location unless they choose to. Still, those wanting to ensure privacy can take steps to disable the features entirely, according to guidance from USA TODAY.
To turn off the Map feature, users should:
Open Instagram and go to Direct Messages.
Tap the Map tab at the top of the inbox.
Tap the settings icon in the top right corner.
Under “Who can see your location,” choose “No one.”
Select “Update” or “Done” to save changes.
