As the 2025 school year approaches, the city of Colorado Springs has a slate of projects in the works to increase pedestrian safety for students, including installing new school zones.

"The changing times mean changing needs," said Tony Karr, Colorado Springs School District 11 executive director of school operations.

Karr said that with more students arriving to schools through a drop-off line rather than school buses, traffic had increased. District 11's Holmes Middle School is one of the schools with a recently installed zone, which generally indicates with flashing lights a 20 mph speed limit at certain times of day.
