WESTLAKE, Ohio (WOIO) - Westlake Police arrested a New York man with a lengthy criminal history after he tried to escape police custody while allegedly in possession of a gun under disability.

According to Westlake Police, on August 3 at around 3:45 a.m., an officer stopped a car at Crocker and Detroit roads after it drove through a red light.

The New York 34-year-old told police he had a marijuana cigarette and an open container of alcohol after officers pointed them out.

According to the report, the officers noted signs of impairment and asked the man several times to get out of the car.

The man refused to get out of the car, and officers noticed the man had a handgun in his hoodie pocket.

When the man stepped out of the car, he attempted to flee on foot.
