The State Budget Committee has green-lighted $1.5 million in additional spending to bring municipal water and sewer service to the Indiana National Guard armory in LaPorte.

The armory, located on State Road 2 southwest of LaPorte, currently relies on a 67-year-old well and septic tank that are far beyond their useful lives, according to the Indiana adjutant general's office.

The new state funds, on top of $750,000 the committee allocated last summer for utility improvements at the LaPorte armory, will help ensure a reliable, safe water supply for National Guard members training at the armory and for firefighting purposes, if necessary.
