LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - To prevent train-related accidents, the Laredo Police Department’s Traffic Unit partnered with Union Pacific Railroad on Thursday, August 7, to target drivers and pedestrians violating railroad traffic laws.
According to authorities, a car or person is struck by a train every three hours in the United States due to failure to follow rail safety laws. Local officials say they are working to make sure that doesn’t happen in Laredo.
During the joint enforcement operation, officers conducted 15 traffic stops and issued 18 citations for various violations, including crossing the tracks while a train was approaching and pedestrians walking along or between railroad tracks.
