CHICAGO (WGN) - On the anniversary of the day she was killed, Chicago police officer Ella French was honored.

The street in front of the criminal courthouse will now be known as Honorary Officer Ella French Way.

Ella was just 29 years old when she was shot and killed in the line of duty on Aug. 7, 2021.

The shooting happened during a traffic stop in the 6300 block of South Bell Avenue in Chicago Lawn.

Ella had over three years of service with the police department. Her partner, Ofc. Carlos Yanez, survived the shooting while her killer, Emonte Morgan, has been sentenced to life in prison.

Prior to her time at CPD, Ella also served as a deputy with the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
