The state has issued a health alert at Bluestem Lake in southern Lancaster County due to harmful blue-green algae blooms.
When health alerts are issued, signs are posted to caution the public and designated swimming beaches are closed. Recreational boating and fishing are allowed, but the public is advised to avoid exposure to the water and any activities that could lead to swallowing the water.
Bluestem State Recreation Area features 742 acres of land and a 325-acre lake located southwest of Lincoln.
Certain strains of blue-green algae release the toxin total microcystin. Samples taken from the lake earlier this week measured above the toxin's threshold of eight parts per billion.
Officials warn against allowing pets to get in the water or drink from the lake. Camping, picnics and oth
