The Pla-Mor Ballroom is bringing a night of jazz with a special big band event this weekend.

On Saturday, the ballroom will host 22 musicians and two female vocalists for a night of live music at 6600 W. O St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The night will feature the returning Bobby Layne Orchestra with vocalist Sheila Greenland. The Reflections 12 Piece Big Band will also perform featuring vocalist Lisa Obermeyer.

Longtime Pla-Mor owner Bobby Layne grew up in Waverly, where he started a seven-piece band as a senior in high school. After graduating, he joined the 43rd Army Band as a trumpet player.

In the ‘60s during a shortage of saxophone players, Layne purchased his first alto saxophone. The band grew to an 11-piece ensemble in the ‘70s.
