COLUMBIA, S.C. — The latest round of U.S. tariffs took effect just after midnight, and early signs point to impacts that reach beyond shipping lanes.

In South Carolina, potential price increases could touch everything from auto manufacturing to the bath and body products made by local artisans.

At Sunrise Artisan Bath and Body in Columbia’s Five Points, owner Tzima Brown crafts skincare with ingredients shipped from overseas. “So, most of the ingredients that I use in my products are imported from Europe, like 95% of the ingredients I use.”

Brown says she buys European inputs because of stricter regulations on fragrances, colorants, and essential oils. “Their ingredients are purer than what a lot of the stuff that we get here.”
