SUMTER, S.C. — A 30-year-old man is safe and receiving medical care after barricading himself inside his apartment at Willow Run Apartments on Friday afternoon, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Police said they were called to the complex shortly after 1:50 p.m. for a wellness check requested by a concerned family member. When officers arrived, the man refused to come out and barricaded himself inside.

As a precaution, Rast Street was closed to traffic, and additional safety measures were put in place to protect nearby residents and businesses.

Following several hours of negotiations involving officers and community resource providers, the man exited the apartment at around 5:15 p.m. Police say he was transported to a medical facility for evaluation.
