UPTOWN — Much of Weiss Memorial Hospital will shut down Friday, coinciding with the troubled safety-net hospital’s removal from federal health insurance programs, a hospital official confirmed.
Weiss’ emergency room, intensive care unit, surgery department and all inpatient floors will cease operations 7 a.m. Friday, a Weiss official said in an interview with Block Club. Some departments at Weiss, 4646 N. Marine Drive, will remain open and are expected to effectively function as a doctor’s office — including the radiology, cardiology, women’s health, orthopedic, behavioral health, internal medicine and sports medicine departments.
Patients will be transferred to surrounding medical centers including Thorek Memorial Hospital and Swedish Covenant, the official confirmed.
“It’s just sad,”
