CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - President Donald Trump's new tariffs have taken effect, impacting dozens of countries and potentially raising the cost of imported goods for Americans.

The tariffs, which began Thursday, are part of Trump's strategy to address what he describes as unfair trade practices. Yale University experts predict that these tariffs could increase the prices of imported goods by 18.3%, marking the highest rate since the Great Depression.

Trump argues that the tariffs will increase federal tax revenue, stating on Truth Social that "billions of dollars, largely from countries that have taken advantage of the United States for many years, will start flowing into the USA."

The tariffs affect over 90 countries, with a minimum rate of 10% on goods imported into the United States.
