ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4) — Over the last few years, the St. George Metropolitan Area has taken significant measures to be more water efficient, including replacing millions of square feet of grass.
The Washington County Water Conservancy District (WCWCD) is working to reduce water usage significantly in the region. As part of their efforts, they have been offering an incentive for residents who are willing to replace their grass lawns with more water-efficient landscaping.
According to WCWCD officials, St. George has removed nearly 3 million square feet of grass and replaced it with other landscaping since 2023. Property owners can be paid up to $2.00 per square foot when they replace their grass lawn with more water-efficient plants, according to specific guidelines.
