HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new baby monk seal on Oahu was given an official Hawaiian name this week.

Keiki from Camp Erdman gifted the baby seal the name Nalani, which translates to “the heavens” or “the sky,” after the clear blue skies over Kaʻena Point.

The pup was born to mama Luana on the north shore.

Wildlife experts say the monk seal pup has been moving confidently across the sand and is becoming more independent with each day.

Officials remind the public that monk seal pups and their mothers need plenty of space and quiet to rest and bond.

The law requires onlookers to stay at least 50 feet away from all Hawaiian monk seals, and stay at least 150 feet away from mothers and pups.
