MADISON (WKOW) — An increase in overnight car break-ins is alarming residents in neighborhoods like Elvehjem and along Meadowlark Drive.

Many of the targeted vehicles were left unlocked. Madison Police Department East District Capt. Ed Marshall highlighted the trend.

"We get some information coming in about individuals seen checking vehicles, walking down a block and checking the door handles," Marshall said. "So that leads us to believe that the pattern of the victim profile is unlocked vehicles."

Commonly-stolen items include cash, credit cards, medications, and jewelry, according to Marshall.

"So we've seen money in cash. We've seen financial instruments, credit cards, things like that, being taken," Marshall said. "Medications have been targeted before or been stolen before. Jewelr
