Arizona’s water future is in jeopardy, and the three state universities are collaborating on a grant-funded project aimed at enhancing groundwater recharge to sustain agriculture and ecosystems.

According to a press release from the Arizona Board of Regents, the Tri-University Recharge and Water Reliability Project involves researching ways to capture precipitation and runoff before it evaporates to replenish the state’s aquifers. In Arizona, annual precipitation averages just 12 inches, and more than 95% of that water evaporates into the air or gets used by plants. ×
