AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Thirteen marmoset monkeys were euthanized at the UMass Amherst's now-closed primate research lab in May, according to records obtained by PETA.

The euthanization was part of a study funded by the National Institutes of Health to examine neural tissue for Alzheimer's disease research. The lab, which had been the subject of protests and lawsuits by PETA, was shut down after completing its research.

PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, learned of the euthanization through a public records request and expressed relief that the testing has finally stopped.

"It's been unfortunate that they've been allowed to harm these animals and kill them for so long. And I am glad that is finally over," said Dr. Katherine Roe, a neuroscientist at PETA.
