OLYMPIA, Wash. – Governor Bob Ferguson has declared August 7, 2025, as Purple Heart Recipient Recognition Day in Washington, according to a proclamation signed by the governor.

This day is dedicated to honoring the state's veterans who have been wounded in battle while defending democracy, individual freedom and human rights.

The Purple Heart, originally created by President George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit, was renamed in 1932. It is awarded to combat-wounded veterans and those who never returned home.

Local governments and veteran organizations are hosting community ceremonies, veteran outreach programs and public education initiatives to deepen awareness of the Purple Heart's legacy.
