VERMILLION, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The Clay County State Attorney’s office has announced Robert Slack, a Vermillion resident, has been sentenced to 30 years in jail.

This comes after Slack, 32, pled guilty to one count of first-degree rape involving a minor and one count of sexual contact with a child.

Slack was sentenced on August 6, 2025, where he will not be eligible for parole until November 2054.

Slack’s conviction is the result of sexual abuse of two minor victims.

“The defendant did not just violate the law,” Clay County State’s Attorney Michael J. Smith told the court during Slack’s sentencing arguments, “he violated the most basic moral boundary we have: the obligation to protect children.”
