MONTREAL — Victoria Mboko, an 18-year-old tennis player from Canada, captured the National Bank Open title on Thursday night. She achieved this remarkable feat by defeating Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. This victory marks Mboko's first tour-level title and comes after a challenging tournament where she battled through a wrist injury.
The match took place at IGA Stadium, where a lively crowd cheered for Mboko as she celebrated her win. After Osaka hit a shot into the net, Mboko dropped to her knees in disbelief, surrounded by enthusiastic fans. The atmosphere was electric, prompting the umpire to request that spectators remain quiet during play.
With this win, Mboko becomes the third Canadian woman to win the National Bank Open in the Open Era, following Bianca Andreescu in 2019 and Faye Urban in 1969. Notably, she is the first to achieve this title in Montreal. Following her victory, she is projected to rise to 25th in the WTA singles rankings, a significant leap from her position outside the top 300 at the beginning of the year.
Throughout the tournament, Mboko showcased her talent by defeating several high-profile players, including Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, and Elena Rybakina. Her performance has made her the second-youngest player in the Open Era to defeat four Grand Slam champions in a single tournament.
As the champion, Mboko will receive $752,275, nearly doubling her career earnings of $458,001. This victory not only highlights her potential but also solidifies her status as the top-ranked Canadian woman in tennis.
