DENVER (KDVR) — In about a week and a half, some workers in Denver may lose their jobs when citywide layoffs begin to take effect. Who will be subject to layoffs remains a mystery.
Denver city workers are on edge as they wait to hear how the city plans to lay off and which departments could be impacted. Union members braved the heat to share their frustrations with us.
"I hear from workers every day; they feel like the city has betrayed them. They feel like Mayor Mike Johnston has betrayed them. They tell me, 'Brother Houston, I thought the mayor was for collective bargaining.' Obviously, he is not," said Ronnie Houston, a longtime Teamsters organizer in Denver.
Though he is retired, Houston is worried about what could happen to other union members who work for the city. Unions are set
