Hugh Freeze isn’t the star of the just-released Netflix documentary on the 2024 SEC football season. He doesn’t light up “Any Given Saturday” like his personal nemesis, swaggy Vandy QB Diego Pavia, or Pavia’s surprisingly engaging head coach. Clark Lea’s unabashed affinity for motivational profanity makes him sound like a wannabe Nick Saban.
The Auburn coach plays a smaller role in the series in part because, unlike Pavia and Lea, he didn’t beat Alabama. Or Vanderbilt. Or five other opponents during a dispiriting 5-7 campaign.
But Freeze’s second Auburn team will always have that four-overtime gut-check victory over ranked Texas A&M. If this program gets back to where it’s been at its best, that 43-41 triumph may be remembered as the dividing line between the dark ages and a brighter fut
