DULUTH, Minn. (WKOW) -- August is National Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, and Aspirus Health is encouraging families to prioritize their children's vision as part of their overall health.

The CDC says nearly 10 percent of U.S. children have vision problems.

Aspirus Health urges families to remember that vision is part of overall health, noting that eye exams can set kids up for success, from looking at the whiteboard in the classroom to keeping an eye on the ball during practice.

"These vision problems can sometimes be permanent if we don't get to them by a certain age, and we think that age is usually between 6 and 8 years old," Dr. Charlie Ahrens, an ophthalmologist with Aspirus Health, said.
