JOHNSTON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - Big changes are coming to the Orchard Lane rail crossing near Goreville.

The upgrades to the crossing were approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission(ICC) on Thursday.

Improvements will include automatic warning devices, highway approach grade improvements, and surface work focused on safety and functionality.

ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said, “The Grade Crossing Protection Fund helps important projects like this one near Goreville come to fruition.”

The design and construction are expected to cost more than $470,000. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund is expected to by 95% of the costs. Union Pacific Railroad Company is expected to pay the remaining 5%.

The work should be completed in the next 18 months.
