WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The West Springfield community gathered on the town common to rededicate its war memorial in honor of Purple Heart Day, celebrating veterans who have been wounded or lost their lives in combat.
The ceremony marked the unveiling of improvements to the war memorial, including the relocation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the center, the rebuilding of the flag plaza and stone wall, and the planting of new flowers by the city's garden club.
"This is something that we wanted to do for a while, to bring life into our war memorial area here," said Mayor William Reichelt of West Springfield.
