Are palms trees? While they may resemble trees, their vascular and systemic growth patterns are unique. Palms are classified botanically along with corn, grasses, lilies and onions. Since Galvestonians call them trees, they rightfully belong in a tree story.

Palms are iconic to Galveston and they are everywhere. And many are under serious threat from Lethal Bronzing Disease.

The disease was first identified in the Rio Grande Valley 50 years ago. Originally called Texas Phoenix Palm Disease, it was renamed because it affects more than just Phoenix palms, and because of the bronze coloration of the infected fronds as the plant declines. Many palm species common in Galveston are vulnerable to the disease, including Canary Island Date Palm, Queen Palm, and Sabal Palm — to name a few.
