Faulty smart electricity meters will need to be repaired within 90 days or compensation will be payable, under new plans announced by the government on Friday.

Labour is also laying out plans to pay households living near new pylons up to £2,500 over ten years as it attempts to bring down the high cost of energy.

Energy Minister, Miatta Fahnbulleh told The i Paper that ramping up the building of new energy infrastructure is the “only” way to bring down bills permanently.

The UK Government wants to double the amount of network infrastructure built over the past decade by 2030, as part of its clean power drive.

Ministers are offering the discounts to try to reduce opposition to the building of new electricity infrastructure they say is crucial to securing “homegrown power”.
