Cannons
Dean Palmer asked, “Do you by any chance know any details about the cannon in Walker Park? Where did it come from, how did it get there, and how old is it?”
Answer: The cannon is possibly the last of 52 cannons that were part of Fort Kekuanohu that gave Fort Street its name.
In 1816 the Russians began construction of a supply house overlooking the harbor. When Kamehameha I realized their intentions were to build a fort and take over his kingdom, he made them leave.
Honolulu Harbor did need some protection, and Oahu Gov. John Adams Kuakini was tasked with finishing the fort. It had walls that were 12 feet high and 20 feet thick.
