ON THIS DAY IN 1905 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “PORTSMOUTH, N.H. ― To the accompaniment of stirring martial music, the sharp barkings of salute guns and the handclapping and cheers of an admiring crowd, the Russian and Japanese peace envoys, with the members of their suites, arrived safely at Portsmouth a few minutes before noon today. Rear Admiral Mead and the officers of the navy yard were on hand to receive them and a few minutes later the entire party was housed in the great storehouse which is to be the scene of the negotiations. There the envoys met face to face for the second time since their arrival in this country and shook hands all around. The trip of the peace commissioners from Newport was uneventful. The fleet appeared in the Portsmouth offing at the expected hour
