Greg Phillinganes had already made the move to Los Angeles from his native Detroit — as part of Stevie Wonder’s band — when Toto formed back in 1977.
The keyboardist knew the band members well from playing sessions together on the West Coast and had a great admiration for the band from its inception. So being part of it now — from 2003 to 2005 and again since last year — has been a welcome addition to one of music’s genuinely stellar resumes.
“It fits in perfectly because it’s the amalgamation of a handful of gifted studio musicians who were blessed enough to form a band that had hits of their own,” Phillinganes, 69, says of Toto, which has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and won six Grammy Awards, logging hits such as “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna” and “Africa.” It also was indu
