Can a state be both deeply admired and widely criticized? Just ask New York.

According to a recent YouGov survey of more than 2,000 Americans, New York finds itself in the middle of the pack when it comes to public favorability — not the most adored state, but far from the least favored.

The survey shows that 54% of Americans view New York very or somewhat favorably. At the same time, 33% of respondents hold an unfavorable view of the Empire State.

Leading the ranks as the most favored state is Hawaii, with 68% positive views. New York’s standing reveals a complex mix of admiration and criticism, as it seemed not to crack the top 20.
