Such a cute little rattler.

Coiled up on the side of the road, it was small enough that I could have cradled it in my two hands. Not that I would have, of course. I like getting close enough for pictures but I ain’t stupid. But it was calm and unbothered as it lay there just a couple of feet in front of my lens.

And lucky, too. I was on my way to the Saturday performance of the annual Writing-On-Stone Rodeo, cruising along the gravel road between Weir Bridge over the Milk River and the turnoff to the rodeo grounds when I saw it. At a glance, it was just an irregular line on the gravel but I recognized it as a snake and managed to swerve around it.
