A dog has bitten off the fingertip of an "infant," with both the mother and the child left in "severe distress."

The unnamed child was eating a biscuit in a play area on Priscott Way in Kingsteignton, Devon on the morning of July 23, when the incident occurred.

Local police said the "loose" dog had entered the play area, without its owner and had bitten the infant child "causing significant injury."

Newton Abbot Police force added: "[The dog] removed the fingertip of the child who was eating a biscuit at the time, causing severe distress to mother and child."

It was said the dog then left the park in an "unconfirmed direction," with officials now describing the dog to be of medium size
