NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh is leaning toward conducting a one-year pilot program of giving 100 residents $300 per month for a year to help them meet their expenses and stay in the city.

During discussions at Thursday night’s workshop session, council members indicated their support for the Guaranteed Basic Income Program.

A $450,000 grant would cover the expense of the test plan, said City Economic Development Director Ali Church.

“The City of Newburgh specifically is part of a grant called the Anti-Displacement Learning Network grant, took an initiative to see if guaranteed basic income in some level in a pilot scheme could reduce displacement from the City of Newburgh,” she said.
